For many New Zealanders, the weekend has become a short breather between two busy workweeks – but it can easily disappear in errands, chores, and screen time. If you use your weekends intentionally, they can become a source of stronger family bonds and renewed energy for yourself. Here’s how to create weekends that bring more connection, joy, and balance.

Create Shared Experiences – Without Big Plans

You don’t need expensive outings or complicated plans to enjoy time together as a family. What matters most is doing something where everyone takes part – and where the focus is on being together rather than achieving something.

  • Cook together – choose a meal everyone can help with, and make it a fun activity rather than a task.
  • Explore your local area – take a walk along the beach, visit a nearby bush track, or check out a weekend market. Fresh air and shared experiences often lead to the best conversations.
  • Start a family tradition – maybe Saturday morning pancakes, a board game night, or a Sunday movie evening. Repetition builds a sense of belonging and comfort.

When weekends have a rhythm of shared moments, they become an anchor in a week that might otherwise feel scattered.

Make Space for Rest and Recovery

It’s easy to fill the weekend with everything you didn’t get done during the week. But if you want to start Monday with energy, it’s important to give yourself time to rest.

Plan some time with no plans. It could be a quiet morning with coffee and the paper, a solo run, or a nap on the couch. This isn’t laziness – it’s giving your body and mind a chance to recharge.

Try keeping at least half a day “sacred” – no appointments, no chores, no screens. That space for calm and spontaneity is often what we miss most in our busy lives.

Share the Load – and Let Go of Perfection

In many households, weekends can feel like an extension of the workweek, with one person carrying most of the practical tasks. That can lead to frustration and drain everyone’s energy.

Instead, share the responsibilities. Make a list of what needs to be done and let everyone take part. Even young children can help set the table or tidy up. When everyone contributes, the weekend feels lighter – and you get more time to enjoy it.

And remember: not everything has to be perfect. If the house isn’t spotless but the mood is good, you’ve made the right choice.

Find Time for Yourself – Without Guilt

Spending the weekend with your family doesn’t mean forgetting yourself. In fact, you’ll be a better partner and parent when you also make time for what energises you.

It might be a surf session, a walk in the hills, reading a book, or catching up with a friend over coffee. Agree with your partner that you both get some “me time” during the weekend – and respect each other’s need for space.

By prioritising yourself, you also show your children that self-care is an important part of a healthy life.

Ease the Transition from Weekend to Weekday

Sunday evenings can easily turn into a rush of stress about the coming week. A calm transition helps everyone start Monday with a clearer mind.

Use Sunday afternoon to prepare gently: plan meals, pack school bags, and sort out clothes. It gives a sense of control and frees up mental space to enjoy the last hours of the weekend.

End the day with something relaxing – a walk around the neighbourhood, a cup of tea, or a family movie. It helps both kids and adults settle and face the new week with calm.

The Weekend as a Foundation for Balance

When you use your weekends consciously, they become more than just a break – they become a foundation for wellbeing. It’s not about filling every moment with activity, but about finding balance between togetherness and rest, between duties and downtime.

Small changes in how you plan and prioritise can make a big difference. A weekend filled with presence, calm, and joy doesn’t just give you energy for Monday – it strengthens the relationships that matter most.
